VETERAN’S, VEHICLES and VITTLES, OH MY!!
Article By the Southern Colorado Mopars
The cruise to the Bruce McCandless Veterans Home in Florence was a smashing success!!
The staff there took good care of us and provided a great BBQ lunch. It was all-you-can eat burgers, brats, Italian sausages (a few folks even found the “HOT” sausages), chips, and drinks. The Veterans came out in two groups, one before their lunch and another after they ate. They really did enjoy the cars and trucks on display and got a big kick out of the three collector military vehicles that participated. War stories abounded, especially as related by a Normandy survivor (with pictures no less), a pilot and by a World War Two vet who served on a bomber base in England. Ya just gotta love those WW II guys!!

The weather was near perfect. We did an impressive convoy from Colorado Springs, through Penrose and on to Florence to the Veterans Home. We had 34 vehicles on display. There were 49 drivers, co-pilots and ride-alongs participating from Denver, Pueblo, and Colorado Springs. The Colorado Mopar Club of Denver, Tri-Lakes Cruisers Club, Southern Colorado Mustang Club, Stockers Car Club, Military Vehicle Collectors of Colorado, Southern Colorado Mopars, and the Colorado Springs Saturday afternoon Show ‘n Shine crowd were represented!! Additionally, participants also offered donations and all combined we were able to donate close to $250 to the Veteran’s Home – a terrific show of support!! We received a very heart-felt “thank you” from the staff.
Everyone had a good time, the Veterans hung out with us, and many people asked “when are we going to do this again?!!?” Remember, you can drive your car, or if it’s not ready, do a ride-along with another club member. If you need any added motivation to get your vehicle into action, this event will do it!!
With that in mind, the SCM Activities Committee is already working on a second trip in the Fall; details of which will come out in the upcoming newsletters. Hope to see the rest of the Club Members at the next cruise.
